The Doll House - Chapter 4 (x)

Written for the lovely baynecroft! This just keeps getting darker and darker. Please please please check the tags, since this is a serial killer AU and it’s rather graphic. I’m guessing we’ve got about 5 to 7 more chapters left.

Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade isn’t who he seems. Devoted father to his daughter, cheerful to his cheating ex-wife - and a serial killer that has gone undetected for over twenty years. Until he meets Mycroft Holmes, who seems more fascinated than appalled and ends up drawn into the ever-increasing web of Greg’s deceptions.

On overthinking. (x)

Mars, this is so utterly Not Just You I can’t even tell you. I’m about to drop this on my blog and you’re likely to see a good 50 reblogs from other authors going “GPO FUCKING YYYYYYY.”

Gaining the…

It’s the whole inner-critic thing that makes it nearly impossible for me to look back at some of the stuff I wrote a year ago because I can see the flaws now because I’ve basically trained myself to look for them. I can’t ignore them. It makes reading things that I loved a year ago impossible.

Then there’s the fics where you edit them six hundred times and no matter what you’re still not happy with them and then you throw them up anyway because you spent hours on it damnit. It’s worse (like the original person said) when the fics get more complicated because there’s just so much going on and you worry about fucking it up and it gets more stressful.

I try to focus less on my opinion and more on what others have said about it, once it’s up, because I’ve kind of discovered that I will always be harsher on myself than everyone else will be. I know I have room for improvement and I highlight the areas I want to work on and keep trying to improve, but I try not to beat myself up too much about it? I think about the fics I’ve read where no, the grammar wasn’t that great, or there was an error or two, or several, but it just worked and I loved it. I try to focus on the fact that most people don’t read just to point out errors, they read to love what you’ve written, and they won’t freak just because you left out a word or forgot a period or something.

A Missing Piece - Chapter 4

Soulmate AU Mystrade, written for the lovely rykoe-little-black-book!

A Missing Piece - Chapter 4

Mycroft is the man who thinks he has everything. His perfect job. His perfect home. Even a little brother (although he certainly ranks among the most annoying). Despite other people and their fascination with finding their soulmates, Mycroft has abandoned any idea of finding his ‘Second’, not after the traumatic death of the first person that was supposed to love him. And then Detective Inspector Gregory Lestrade walks into his little brother’s life, and Mycroft finds himself unnecessarily fascinated..

Icarus - Chapter 2 - "Balance" (x)

I’m doing two things for Let’s Create Cabin Pressure, April’s challenge, and this is the second one, a series of connected vignettes showing a slow-building Douglas/Martin relationship. :)

So I just kind of want to address this mentality I’ve seen floating around my dashboard lately. That somehow, fanartists (fanart and fanfic included) ‘owe’ the people that are consuming their art/writing. That we are obligated to do everything perfect and update on time because it’s what consumers want. Or that if we hiatus for whatever reason, we need to come back because we ‘owe’ people. I’ve also seen this idea that by editing what you’ve written or cleaning up what you’ve drawn, you’re going ‘above and beyond’.

Simply by writing or drawing the thing, we are going above and beyond what we HAVE to do. Fanartists do not owe their consumers anything*. We don’t have to write or draw the thing. We do it because we love to and share it because we like making people happy. We don’t (or shouldn’t, rather) do it because we’re being pressured into updating.

I’d be the first to admit I’m not perfect. I don’t update super regularly. I’m also a full-time grad student with about six hundred obligations. Writing for fun is my hobby. Have I stayed up late and lost sleep to finish a prompt, or a chapter draft? Yeah. A lot. Have I cried and bit my nails and worried and felt guilty because I couldn’t update on time? Yeah. Probably more than I should. I’m human. Fanfic is not my full time job. Writing isn’t my full-time job.

I love my readers. They are, with very few exceptions, utterly lovely people. They don’t pressure me. They don’t make snarky comments. I love them and try my best to update when I can so that they can continue reading.

Don’t be one of those people that simply comments ‘More!!’. Or who comments ‘I want to like this, but I don’t think you’ll finish it.’ Be the one who tells the writer what you love about it and expresses enthusiasm to see more. The kind that we love and want to write for, not the kind that makes us resent all the effort we have put into this.

*With the exception of paid work where there is a contract established and it is weaselly to shirk your duties/etc. This is talking about free fanfic/fanart.

The Little Things Give You Away

This was a commission for the lovely mystradesexytimes! It’s written in the universe of ‘Strange Days’, an awesomely under-appreciated movie that everyone should go watch now.

The Little Things Give You Away

Mace never could have predicted how much things would change. Or how, in a way, nothing changed at all. Life continued, and although they were different, some things remained the same.

You can commission me to write things! Details are here.

OH NO! :(

Sometimes I swear that this project is cursed. On the bright side, it’s allowing me to take it in a totally different direction and speed it up a bit. I hope there’s only maybe 3-4 chapters left of it instead of the 6-7 that was originally projected…

But now I have to write it from scratch. On top of a 12-15 page paper I have due this weekend. And the other updates I wanted to get out.

Ugh. Too much to do, too little time.

I just accidentally deleted all of Superstar Ch4. And get to start over.

Fuck my life. Gdamnit. Admittedly, not that it existing helped much, since most of it was going to be re-written, but it was something. Now I have 94 words for a 5k-7k long chapter that I was going to update tomorrow.

Nooooooot going to happen.

The first round of paper edits on Superstar Ch4 are done!

Even if it’s mostly crossing out, notes like ‘make this more relevant’, ‘oh god what the fuck was this’, ‘this is good. more of this’, and lots of notes to re-write or scene additions.

Hoping to type up the first round of paper edits tomorrow and then do another round of paper edits, type it up Monday and send it to Dreig. So the chapter should be up Monday, maybe Tuesday.

Progress! But it’s going to be a painful editing process.

Again, I’m so very sorry it’s taken so long to update this. It was a rather unacceptable delay, and there shouldn’t be another one like it again, for either of my long projects (or any of them, really). My grad school life is slightly under control and it’s enough that writing can become a major part of my life again.

Thanks for being patient and hanging in there!
